Perry was born in Chicago to two actors Laurie Metcalf and Jeff Perry. Her first TV roles included two episodes in the role of Jackie Harris (as seen in flashback) on the ABC sitcom Roseanne, the character portrayed by her mom. Perry did not decide to consider a career in acting until she reached the age of adulthood due to her parents being afraid of the negative effects that stress could cause. Perry claimed that she was too nervous to be an actor during high school, but started performing in theater classes at Northwestern University as a way to connect with people following her transfer to the university from Boston University. Perry had the opportunity to secure tiny TV roles on Law & Order: Criminal Intent after she graduated. However, her homesickness brought her back to California again where she began working on stage. The Other Place was performed by her and her mother on Broadway in 2013. In 2015, she starred alongside Kevin McKidd alongside her mother in Eugene O'Neill's Pulitzer Prizewinning drama Anna Christie. The Odyssey Theatre Ensemble is located in West Los Angeles. In the year 2016, Perry appeared on nine episodes of ABC's crime thriller The Family. Perry was also featured in an appearance on ABC's political thriller Scandal with her father. In the same year, her character was cast the younger model of Mary Cooper (Sheldon Cooper's mother) on Young Sheldon, a spin-off of the CBS sitcom The Big Bang Theory again portraying a younger version of her mother's role. Despite the fact that she has a connection with her family to the character she received the role via an audition.
